Tempering

Steel parts can absorb hydrogen, e.g. during machining, during hardening or galvanic metal deposition. This hydrogen can result in mechanical warping which in extreme cases can lead to cracking or brittle fractures.

Heat treatment such as annealing or tempering can expel the majority of the hydrogen.
